Tasmania is probably one of my most favourite places to visit in Australia!
I have been lucky enough to have visited Hobart twice, once for leisure with my family and now recently for a work trip.
Both trips I commenced in stunning Hobart, state capital of Tasmania a truly spectacular city that provides a welcome relief from the hustle and bustle of major cities in Australia. I don’t know anyone who can’t help but fall in love with Hobart in seconds. Unlike many major cities, there were no soaring glass skyscrapers but instead the streets are lined with vintage old buildings; former warehouses and port buildings converted into small restaurants, cafes and craft shops.
Travelling to Tasmania in August I was a tad nervous for the weather given how cold it can be, but it was fantastic, no snow (sadly) but chilly and definitely scarf and beanie weather but truly refreshing!
We stayed at a lovely hotel right in town opposite Salamanca Market place which is located on Hobart’s waterfront and is one of Australia’s largest and most vibrant outdoor markets. Each Saturday from 8.30 am to 3 pm more than 300 stalls pop up along the gracious, tree-lined and historic Salamanca Place to showcase arts, crafts, jewellery, fresh food and produce, collectables and homewares!!
A stone throws away is Brooke Street Pier Wharf which has really nice restaurants with waterfront views everywhere you look and most of the cafes have been converted from port buildings which is really cool! Whilst in town for the night we dined at the Tavern 42 Degrees South on Brooke Street Wharf which had the most delicious food!
We were lucky enough to meet up with two of the Nurses Curis had placed at one of the major Private Hospitals in Hobart and had a lovely dinner together. It was great to meet them in person and hear about what they like about their jobs and how they have spent their time so far in Hobart. The following day we were also lucky enough to have a tour of the Hospital facility with the Director of Nursing where the Curis candidates are placed and hear about their current struggles etc with recruiting staff.
Not only is Tasmania picture perfect in so many ways, Housing in Tasmania provides affordable and secure housing on low incomes or with special needs. Unlike most capital cities the median house price is around $490,000 and the median price for rent per week in Hobart for 3 bedrooms is just $450 per week! Great value for money considering what Tasmania has to offer!
